You’re fortunate, some have a much worse problem with the capless systems! (Not just on Transit.) There are apparently a small number of fuel filler nozzles out in the wild that have a sort of ridge on them about 1-1.5″ from the end.

If the tank was vented to the open air and allowed to expand and contract with temp changes it would breath and pull moisture in from the air. If you stop that then only minimal air enters during fueling and corrosion can be controlled with additives already present in the fuel.
