Why is the gas gauge on my 79 F350 not working?
Why is the gas gauge on my 79 F350 not working?
Well I am back again to see if I can get any info on the gas gauge in my 79 F350. I am looking in the Ford repair manual for the 78 F250 and it says I need a Rotunda gauge and it says that the power supplied is pulsating current and I have that at the tank. Good thing I read the manual for I was going to run a wire to the tank.
How does the gas gauge work in a Ford?
As your gas tank is drained of fuel, the float drops and an electrical current is sent to the gauge to tell the driver what’s going on with the supply. When the fuel level changes, the current also changes — higher currents mean the tank is full and lower currents mean the tank is moving towards empty.
What to do if your gas gauge does not work?
Check the fuse panel in the engine bay to determine which fuses are related to the dash panel and check them for damage — then replace any blown fuses. If the fuse isn’t the issue, there is a number of other things that can go wrong. The bimetallic strips may be broken and wiring may be frayed or otherwise damaged.
Can a sending unit work with an aftermarket gauge?
If you’re going an aftermarket gauge, depending on who you get it from, you might have to use their sending unit. Most aftermarket gauges are not for use with a factory Ford sending unit. However, Autometer does have special gauges which work with the factory sending unit.

What do I do if my gas gauge is not working?
In most cases, to gain access to the fuel tank sending unit mount / fuel pump mounting hole, you’ll need to drop the gas tank down. Be sure to do this when there is either minimal gas in the vehicle, or it’s been siphoned out.

What does the gas gauge read when the tank is empty?
Most older sending units are a “0-30” or “0-60” ohm sending unit, meaning that when the tank is at empty, the resistance will read 0ohms, where at full, it will read 30, or 60ohms. To test this, simply put your mutl-meter to ohms (resistance) setting, and touch off one probe to the sending terminal, and the other probe to ground.
Why is my fuel level gauge not working?
I was therefore surprised to find my fuel level gauge not responding when I drove the truck last week. The gauge is sitting at the lowest point the needle can travel to (i.e. the same spot where it sits when the key’s out of the switch), and the gauge doesn’t move when I switch tanks using the factory switchover valve.
What to do when your gas gauge goes out?
Having a bad gas gauge can be a serious inconvenience. Usually, the problem is easy to identify and can be fixed at home. Here’s what you need to know when your Ford’s gas gauge goes out. If playback doesn’t begin shortly, try restarting your device. Videos you watch may be added to the TV’s watch history and influence TV recommendations.
What happens when your gas gauge is not working?
The gas gauge tells you how much fuel is in your gas tank and alerts you when it’s time to refuel. If your gas gauge is not working, the inaccurate information it provides may cause you to run out of gas unexpectedly.
How does the resistance of a gas gauge change?
The fuel float contacts run on a potentiometer, or variable resistor, whose resistance changes depending on float level, effecting a change in output voltage. Some systems are wired so that high fuel level contacts the low-resistance section, gradually increasing resistance as fuel level drops.
What does a gas gauge tell you about a car?

How is the gas gauge in the instrument cluster?
The gas gauge in the instrument cluster is the visual indication of activity in the fuel tank and sending unit. Some gas gauges are directly controlled by voltage feedback from the sending unit, while others are controlled by the instrument cluster, which itself gets voltage information from the sending unit.
