I have drained and bled the system 3 times as per the guides on here ie sliding the heater intake back to the bleed hole until water comes out etc. but still the same issue. I have removed the new thermostat again with the housing and when i put it in boiling hot water it doesn’t seem to be letting water through the inlet, it just sits in the tube.

If coolant is not flowing through your cooling system I would try to determine if there is some sort of blockage, and where it may be. Draining the cooling system and removing the suspect radiator hose could determine if the hose itself is the source of the problem.

I just replaced a leaking lower radiator hose a week and a half ago and did a full flush. I also hooked the hose up to the heater core and ran water both directions. Water flowed freely. Both hoses to and from the heater core are hot. Upper radiator hose is hot, lower is cold. The coolant is close to full.
