Why do my 4 wheel drive indicator lights go off?

I have a 2003 Tahoe, and my indicator light changes from 2 wheel drive to auto or to neutral without me pressing any buttons!? Anyone else have this problem? I hope it’s not expensive to fix 🙂 I’ve got 55k miles on my Tahoe and indicator lights for the 4 wheel drive will come off sometimes when I start the car.

One day while attempting to shift into 4wd high from 2wd, all lights went out on the 2wd-4wd-4wd low swith and the “Service 4wd” light came on. I had a ’99 Tahoe that did this once and replcing the fuse worked.

What does the 4 wheel drive light mean?

The vehicle will automatically engage 4 wheel drive when a loss of traction is sensed. Otherwise, the front axle is engaged, but the vehicle’s power is sent only to the rear wheels.

Why is my 4 wheel drive light not engaging?

If you don’t shift it into neutral, the 4wd light will continue to flash and won’t get into gear. Seems to be a common occurrence on these trucks. Dodge dealers recommend engaging 4-lo, then back in 2-wheel drive, then back in 4-wheel drive hi (4H). This sequence apparently resolves the problem.

What does pin 5 on 4WD indicator do?

All pin 5 does is send power to the 4wd indicator light when the actuator completely extends. You should be able to figure out what isn’t making a connection with a test light and an ohm meter. My 4wd actuator is a 2 pin.
