Is the SBC 350 engine running very rich?

The engine has run very rich since I bought it 6 months ago, and no amount of idle screw adjustment seems to have made any difference. I am running AC 44TS plugs, gapped at .035, and they are very sooty/ black when I inspect them.

Why is my engine running with a rich mixture?

If one injector is not flowing as it should or is stuck open, it might cause a rich mixture in your engine. If you think that your engine is running with a rich mixture, there are some things you should check to confirm this.

What should I do if my engine idle is not the same?

If they are not the same, set them at 1-1/2 turns out (counterclockwise) from fully closed. If the engine idles better, then carefully turn all four of them in (clockwise is leaner) about 1/16 th of a turn and evaluate the change on your vacuum gauge.

How to know if your engine is running rich?

7 Symptoms of an Engine Running Rich. 1 Check Engine Light. 2 Fuel smell from exhaust. 3 Constantly refilling your gas tank. 4 Poor engine performance. 5 Black smoke from the exhaust. 6 Sooty spark plugs. 7 High carbon monoxide content.
