What kind of lock do I use on pinion nut?

What kind of lock do I use on pinion nut?

I use Lock Tight on the ring gear bolts, pinion nut and retaining bolt. I don’t use it on the bearing cap bolts. I have seen the ring gear bolts, pinion nut and retaining bolt come loose, but never a bearing cap bolt. Use the blue medium strength on the retaining bolt and the red on the others.

What’s the difference between red and blue pinion lock bolts?

In automotive applications there is mainly just two, “red” and “blue” (which refers to their color). The red one is for more permanent type applications where the joint is rarely taken apart and the blue is considered a medium strength and used when the screws are removed more often.

Do you have to use crush nut on pinion shaft?

You have to be super careful no to overtigthen the crush nut. Or get a solid one and some shims. Once the pinion nut is out you have to re-setup the gears to make sure they mesh right. I use Lock Tight on the ring gear bolts, pinion nut and retaining bolt.

Can a pinion nut and retaining bolt come loose?

I have seen the ring gear bolts, pinion nut and retaining bolt come loose, but never a bearing cap bolt. Use the blue medium strength on the retaining bolt and the red on the others. The retaining bolt can be hard enough to get out without using the red high strength Lock Tight on it. (You must log in or sign up to reply here.)
