What is Shigella EIEC?
What is Shigella EIEC?
Abstract. Shigella and enteroinvasive Escherichia coli (EIEC) are gram-negative bacteria responsible for bacillary dysentery (shigellosis) in humans, which is characterized by invasion and inflammatory destruction of the human colonic epithelium.
How can you tell the difference between EIEC and Shigella?
EIEC are strains that possess some of the biochemical characteristics of E. coli and have the ability to cause dysentery using the same method of invasion as Shigella does. Sequencing of multiple housekeeping genes indicates that EIEC is more related to Shigella than to non-invasive E. coli.
What causes EIEC?
It is currently unknown what foods may harbor EIEC, but any food contaminated with human feces from an ill individual, either directly or via contaminated water, could cause disease in others. Outbreaks have been associated with hamburger meat and unpasteurized milk.
How is EIEC transmitted?
coli (EIEC), enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), Shigella, and enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC). Escherichia coli may be transmitted directly from person-to-person via fecal–oral contact, or indirectly, through contaminated food or water.
How do you treat Shigella naturally?
In most cases, you can recover from shigellosis by resting and drinking fluids to replace what you’ve lost from diarrhea. Avoid drugs that stop diarrhea or slow down the gut. Drugs such as diphenoxylate with atropine (Lomotil) or loperamide (Imodium) can make shigellosis worse.
Is Shigella worse than E coli?
E. coli symptoms in adults are usually much milder and produce more typical gastrointestinal problems. Shigella, however, may produce serious bloody diarrhea both adults and children.
Does Eiec produce toxins?
EIEC is closely related to Shigella and is thought to cause watery diarrhea through invasion of the epithelial cells of the colon. It does not produce enterotoxins. Symptoms include abdominal cramps, malaise, tenesmus, and occasionally fever.
How is ETEC diagnosed?
How is infection with ETEC diagnosed? In the laboratory, infection with ETEC is diagnosed when the bacteria are cultured from samples of stool. The techniques necessary to identify ETEC are not widely available, and physicians may make the diagnosis based on a patient’s history and symptoms.
Which organ is affected by dysentery?
Dysentery is an infection in your intestines that causes bloody diarrhea. It can be caused by a parasite or bacteria.
Does Shigella go away on its own?
Children under age 5 are most likely to get shigella infection, but it can occur at any age. A mild case usually clears up on its own within a week. When treatment is needed, doctors generally prescribe antibiotics.
