What is a stub end?
Used in conjunction with a backing flange, a Stub End is, essentially, a short length of pipe with one flared end and one square-cut end, which is welded to a pipe of the same NPS, material grade and schedule. Type A Stub Ends are produced and machined to fit Lap Joint flanges. They are the most common.
Why stub ends are used?
Essentially, stub ends allow to minimize the weight of high-grade material in stainless, duplex, and nickel alloy piping, saving costs. Of course, the bigger the diameter and the class of the flanges, the higher the saving!
What is a Type A stub end?
Type A – Type “A” Stub Ends are for use with standard Lap Joint Flanges. The Lap thickness on the Stub End is greater than, or equal to, the nominal thickness of the pipe wall. Also, type “A” has its outside corner radius to receive Lap Joint Flanges. The inside corner is square.
