Common questions

What is a front axle differential?

What is a front axle differential?

A differential is part of the front and/or rear axle assembly. The differential allows wheels on the same axle to rotate at different speeds. When your vehicle goes around a corner the wheel on the outside has to travel faster than the wheel on the inside. The differential allows this to happen.

What happens when you put a live axle on a differential?

With a live axle, when high torque is applied through the differential, the traction on the right rear tire is lower as the axle naturally wants to turn with the torsion of the drive shaft (but is held stationary by being mounted to the vehicle frame). This coined the terms “one wheel peel” or “one tire fire”.

Can a locked axle be welded to an open differential?

The internal spider gears of an open differential can also be welded together to create a locked axle; this method is not recommended as the welding process seriously compromises the metallurgical composition of the welded components, and can lead to failure of the unit under stress.

How many differentials are in a 4 wheel drive car?

All the above comments apply to central differentials as well as to those in each axle: full-time four-wheel-drive (often called “All Wheel Drive”) vehicles have three differentials, one in each axle, and a central one between the front and rear axles (transfer case).

How are limited slip differentials and open differentials different?

Both limited-slip differentials and open differentials have a gear train that allows the output shafts to spin at different speeds while holding the sum of their speeds proportional to that of the input shaft.

Can you put an axle in front diff?

Far too much was actually from the front diff output shaft Imo, but after sticking my new OEM axle in the diff the overall play was reduced by at least 50% so I felt a lot better about the majority of the wear being on my axle splines, not the diff.

Where can I find the dimensions of an axle?

The dimensions and spline counts of each axle as well as universal joint part numbers can be found on each page. Please be sure to measure carefully before ordering. U-Joints, Seals, Ball Joints, Steering Knuckle Parts, Yokes, Nuts and more.

What kind of front axles are at Denny’s?

Denny’s Driveshafts offers a wide selection of 4×4 Front Axle Shafts and related parts for most of the popular GM 8.5 inch, D44, D50 and D60 front ends as well as others for CHEVY, GM, DODGE, FORD, JEEP and SCOUT four wheel drive front ends.

What kind of axles does Yukon gear and axle make?

Proper driveline training leads to great careers. Yukon Gear & Axle offers an extensive line of high-performance axle kits for popular Chevrolet, Ford, Dodge, Jeep, Cadillac, Toyota, GMC, Lexus, and Nissan applications. Axles endure a lot of torque and absorb tons of driveline shock.
