What does it mean when a car battery goes dead?

As soon as I turned the key to start the car the battery went completely dead. The starter did not engage and the electrical went out. I replaced the battery. When I turned the key to the on position nothing turned on. Not the radio or any of the dashboard lights. I tried starting the car and there was not response, exactly like a dead battery.

Where are the fuses in a car located?

Most of the time, one is in the engine bay and a second is in the vehicle somewhere under the dash or on a kick panel. The engine bay fuse box usually holds the larger fuses for things like the alternator, electric fans or starter. The fuse panel inside usually houses the smaller fuses for things like the brake lights, clock and radio.

If you don’t have a multimeter, I can’t recommend any ‘safe’ troubleshooting procedures other than removing and thoroughly cleaning and retightening the connections.

What happens if you hook up a car battery wrong?

Sparks created by hooking up the cables wrong or touching the cable ends together can ignite the hydrogen gas from the battery, causing it to explode. Car batteries also contain acid that can get on your skin, which, as you can imagine, is particularly problematic if the battery explodes.

What happens if you connect a jumper cable to a dead battery?

Connecting the jumper cable to the negative terminal of the dead battery can create sparks and potentially cause an explosion. You should never attempt to jumpstart a frozen battery, as doing so can cause it to explode. Remove the dead battery, bring it inside, and allow it to thaw before attempting to jumpstart the vehicle.

Can a low voltage car battery kill you?

Because your body is not a good conductor of electricity, a relatively low-voltage car battery can’t push enough current through to kill you. Still, there have been accounts of people being shocked by car batteries, so you should always proceed with caution.
