Why does my car clunk when I shake the box?

What I think happened is there was grit between my springs and they weren’t moving side to side, causing my axle to move side to side making a clunk while driving. While I can still replicate the clunk if I REALLY shake the box side to side, it does not clunk while driving over bumps and whatnot because the springs are now absorbing that.
