Guaranteed precision and dimensional accuracy and are built to withstand super-heavy loads without compressing.

Are plastic shims structural?

Structural plastic shims have consistent thicknesses, and are often color-coded, which simplifies installation and inspection in the field. The shims are also stackable. Some products can fit virtually any size joint just by combining standard sizes.

Do all doors need shims?

If the rough openings are sized 2 inches larger than the net door size, and if the door frame is roughly centered in the opening, the remaining gaps between the jambs and the framing are only 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch wide. However, if you’re installing a solid-core door, whether it’s prehung or not, always use shims.

How many shims should a window have?

When you shim, always use two shims in opposite directions so that they create parallel faces. Some people just put them in from one side and the result is that the shim actually only touches the window frame on the very edge of the frame, not giving adequate support.

Do you shim the top or bottom of window?

Install shims on the sides of the window in the center, and about 4 inches down from the top and up from the bottom. Some windows have dedicated holes to fasten the jambs to the framing (see next page). Place shims in those locations. Often, the center of the side jambs will have to be pushed in a bit.
