Should clutch fork move freely?
You can move the clutch fork back and forth with your finger, It should NOT be able to move vertically if it does, it has fallen off the pivot ball, or you broke it somehow. The release fork moves about 1 inch using the slave cylinder on a new clutch.
Should my clutch fork have play?
The play allows the throwout bearing to be pulled away from the clutch fingers when the clutch pedal is not being pushed. Helps prevent the bearing from riding on the fingers, especially at higher RPM’s. Actually, mine has more as I have 1/4″ fork play at the bearing (which in my case is the minimum recommended.

Yes, the T/O Bearing will ride on the pressure plate fingers at all times. Like mentioned above, there is a big difference between no load (clutch released), and loaded (clutch depressed). Additionally, how far should a clutch pressure plate move? very little. 1/4 MM or . 010″ is fine.

How is the pressure plate attached to the flywheel?
The pressure plate is bolted to the flywheel – and so spins when the flywheel spin. In effect the pressure plate is a spring loaded clamp – designed to clamp down on the clutch plate when the clutch is engaged.
What happens when you depress the clutch pedal?
When you depress the clutch pedal, this force is transferred to the clutch fork (usually hydraulically). The clutch fork is attached to one end of the throw out bearing. The clutch fork pivots with the movement of the clutch pedal, with the “forked” end pushing the throw out bearing toward the pressure plate.

If there is no pressure at all, most likely the throw-out bearing fork rod or the linkage to it broke. If a pressure plate is worn, or t/o bearing bad, flywheel scorched, all that you would sttill feel pressure on the petal.

It is only moving the fingers in about a 1/4″ or so, and that movement is the total stroke capacity of the pedal movement @ 6″, and the cable end of the fork which is moving front to rear ro its full capacity.
What causes a petal to fall out of the clutch?
Check linkage. sometime the rod that pushes the t/o rod fork will fall out of the rod. It’s not attached, held in place only by spring pressure. Easy fix if that’s the case, caused by out of adjustment. Good luck , hope that’s all it is. Worst case all pressure plate componets destroyed and nothing to give petal something to push
