When the truck is cleaned up it looks new and the rust and bubbling paint really looks ugly. So I went trying to get some info on what I should do to get this fixed up before it gets worse. The truck only has 59K miles on it so my first thought was to fix it right.

IMO, it’s a 50/50 shot in the dark because in both cases there’s no guarantee you won’t see it bubbling or rusting out again in 2-3 years later because it rust from the inside /underside out. Oh, and it’s not just a Chevy / GMC truck issue because I’ve seen D**** & F*** Trucks 3-5 years old with the same rusting issues.

The bondo and paint will last one winter before it bubbles since the rust is coming from the back forward, so the only way to properly address it is to do it from the back, which you cant get to without removing the bed side. You could also find a whole new bed, I saw a NNBS full bed for sale for 1300 the other day.

It’s funny, these Silverados used to take longer to rust out. Honestly, it just appears to be surface rust. After years in the auto body field I can personally tell you there is NO NEED to replace the panel or patch it.

It will absolutely, positively rust out even faster. Pulled the plugs and tail lights on my 2013 when I bought it in February of this year. Super low mile Saskatchewan truck and it was a nice surprise that although dirt had collected in between the skins there was no rust at all.
