One of the favourite routes visitors to the area enjoy is the Whitby to Robin Hood’s Bay walk. This cliff top route follows a very popular section of the Cleveland Way. It covers 7 miles and should take around 3 hours to complete.

Is it a difficult walk on the coast from Whitby to Robin Hood’s Bay?

This walk is basically a cliff-top trail around the coast between the two towns. It starts off from the ruins in Whitby, and comes out above the bay. It took us around four hours to complete, walking relatively slowly and not properly attired. It could easily be done in 2-3 hours.

Why is Robin Hoods Bay so called?

The name itself is believed to be derived from the Old English word ‘Fygela’ which meant ‘marshy ground’. The first evidence of man in the area was 3000 years ago when Bronze Age burial grounds were dug on the high moorland a mile or so south of the village. These are known as Robin Hood’s Butts.

Can you walk from Sandsend to Whitby at high tide?

The walk from the West Pier in Whitby to the cliffs at Sandsend and then back is about 4 and a half miles. Parts of the beach do get cut off at high tide so check the tide times at UK Tide Times when planning your walk. The whole length of the beach is dog-friendly from 1 October to 30 April.

Robin Hood’s Bay is a dead end once you drive down into the lower village. Please be aware that much of the village is pedestrianised and you cannot drive up to many of the cottages.
