Is the T-Bird tachometer a cable driven unit?

Is the T-Bird tachometer a cable driven unit?

In the course of our T-Bird restoration we converted the cable-driven, 50 year-old tachometer, to a new electronic unit. The original one was driven from the distributor, which had a special geared assembly that attached to a speedometer-like cable.

A case in point is what happened to Alexander one day while working on his T-bird. reinforcement of the chassis (or… why a convertible is not just a hardtop). Do NOT order the IVR4. It is not for our Tbirds. & follow instructions below it.

Where does the circuit board go on a tach?

In fact, most modern tachs only have a small circuit board inside, so it will fit pretty easily inside the housing of an old mechanical unit. We recommend simply gluing the electronic tach’s circuit board to the backside of the original tach’s face plate.

What do you remove from a T Bird?

Speedometer and gauges module comes off. The next thing to remove was the seat. All T-Birds had power seats in 1955, and the mechanism was fairly complex. What kind of battery does T Bird have?

The engine hadn’t been run since 1994, so there was no way to know its condition. The old 6-volt battery would crank the engine, but a test of the ignition showed the weakest of sparking at the plugs. We decided to make things easier by installing a 12-volt set of points and temporarily wiring up a 12-volt coil.

How did we replace the seat tracks on T Bird?

The seat tracks dissassembled. To replace the pivot arms we cut an appropriate length of bar stock and chucked it in the lathe. We turned down one end to the correct diameter to fit into its pivot assembly, then turned the other end to 1/2 inch diameter. We drilled the arm end with a 1/2 inch bit and then pressed in the new pivot arm.
