Old diesel engines leak oil. It is kind of the nature of the beast. Most of the leaks come from seals and gaskets that have aged and are no longer doing their job. The seals and gaskets dry out or harden with age and allow the fluid to leak by.

How can I tell if my HPOP is leaking oil?
You can check for slow oil leaks from the 7.3 HPOP by checking the HPOP reservoir level (With the engine OFF!) The reservoir should have oil all the way up to within 3/4″ to 1″ from the top of the inspection plug. Other symptoms include a gradual loss of power due to lower pressure from the HPOP’s oil delivery system.
