Common questions

How to seal a front crankshaft oil seal?

How to seal a front crankshaft oil seal?

Install a new front crankshaft oil seal. Obtain a seal pilot/installation tool from a crankshaft front seal service kit and install the pilot into the seal. Apply a bead of Mopar Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant or equivalent to the gear housing cover.

Where is the harmonic balancer on a Cummins Engine?

Vibration is a natural part of any engine, but just like anything else, too much or too little of it is a potential debacle. Where it concerns diesel motors, the happy medium is affected directly by the harmonic balancer at the end of the crankshaft.

How do you change the seal on a Cummins?

Examine your new seal to get an idea of the structure of the old one. Once your small holes are drilled evenly, you can screw in your slide hammer and give it a couple taps out at each location. Work your way around giving a couple taps on each hole. Within one pass around all the different holes the thing will probably pop right out.

What are the two types of crankshaft seals?

Since there are two ends of the crankshaft, there are two types of seals: the front crankshaft seal and the rear crankshaft seal, also known as the front main and rear main seals. Loss of oil will eventually cause serious internal engine damage.

Install a new front crankshaft oil seal. Obtain a seal pilot/installation tool from a crankshaft front seal service kit and install the pilot into the seal. Apply a bead of Mopar Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant or equivalent to the gear housing cover.

How does a harmonic balancer seal work on an engine?

This seal is constructed with a metal outer ring a rubber lip seal using a small circular spring which holds tension on the lip seal as it rides against the sealing surface of the harmonic balancer hub. A harmonic balancer or dampener is a weighted circular part unit used to help an engine run smoothly and keep in balance. What Goes Wrong?

What causes the seal on the crankcase to loose?

As in with any engine seal heat and engine vibration can cause the seal to become hard and loose its sealing ability which will allow residual engine crankcase pressure to force oil past the seal and out from the engine.

How can I tell if my engine balancer is leaking?

Inspect the balancer’s sealing hub for damage and grooves where the old seal rode against. In the image below you can see burnt oil residue which is present in all engines. If this balancer is installed in its current state the new seal will leak.
