Sunsail’s RYA Competent Crew course aims to introduce the complete beginner to cruising under sail, equipping novice sailors with the skills required to be an active and useful crew member. The course is completed over the course of five days, with 100 miles at sea and four hours of night sailing.
What do you do as Competent Crew course?
Competent Crew is very much about learning by experience. You will live aboard a yacht throughout, and during your time on board you will be taught about safety at sea as well as learning to master the essential crewing skills of; steering, changing sails, reefing and tying the essential knots.
What should I bring to a Competent Crew?
What to Pack for an RYA Competent Crew Course.
- A soft bag (about 50 – 70 litres should be more than enough!).
- Suncream and lipsalve with UV protection – the more the merrier!
- Sun Hat – for the same reasons as above.
- Sunglasses – there is a theme developing here don’t you think?
Do you need Competent Crew before day skipper?
Yes you can! The RYA Minimum requirements for taking the Day Skipper practical course are to have logged 5 days onboard a cruising yacht, 100NM & 4 night hours. This would have been covered on the Competent Crew course.
Does Competent Crew expire?
This goes for the spectrum of certificates from RYA Competent Crew to RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Ocean. These certifications are renewable every 5 years and all instructors must attend a two day assessment on the water with an RYA Examiner.
How long does a Yachtmaster last?

What do you wear on a sailing course?
As a general principle, your clothing should be comfortable, quick drying and breathable. Modern synthetic fibres or merino wool are good for garments used at sea. Cotton jeans and T Shirts retain damp air and salt water and are best avoided at sea.
What should I bring to a sailing course?
So pack fleece tops, thermal long sleeved or short sleeved t-shirts, vests, comfortable quick drying trousers or tracksuit bottoms (not denim as that takes too long to dry). Gloves, hat, scarf and plenty of thick socks. Hot weather? Shorts and t-shirts, again quick drying fabrics are best.
Can you fail Day Skipper?
Strictly speaking, a student can complete the practical Day Skipper Course without the Theory element. However, in practice, the vast majority of students will be unable to pass the course without a good working knowledge of the Day Skipper Theory Course Syllabus.
Can a day skipper sail at night?
What are your limits on passing this? You can skipper a boat on coastal passages in daylight hours, and if pushed should be able to navigate after dark in reasonable conditions.

Where can I take a RYA Competent Crew course?
You can also choose to take the RYA competent crew course as a consecutive 5 day course at a cost of £550. All students need to arrive at the Hamble Marina Centre to board the yacht. By the end of the course, you will receive a RYA Competent Crew certificate and be a competent and valuable crew member to anyone you go sailing with.
When do you become a competent dinghy sailor?
It is also an ideal stepping stone for dinghy sailors to try yachting and for those who have already done some crewing but wish to learn the right way. At the end of the 5 days you will have become, as the name suggests, a competent (and confident) member of the crew.
