How can I tell if my PTO clutch is working?

How can I tell if my PTO clutch is working?

Simple test would be to remove the mower deck belt from the PTO pulley and try to engage the PTO. If it doesn’t stall, the clutch is not your problem. If it does stall I would guess you’ve had a bearing fail in the clutch. The other thing to check is the seat switch if it’s still enabled.

Can a PTO clutch kill a lawn mower?

Ok I ahve this 88′ 185 hydro with a 46″ deck. Got it running very well. I removed the deck and gave it a good cleaning, just scraped out, no power washer. Now that I want to actually mow…it started fine…runs fine …BUT when I engage the mower it Kills the engine. It does not matter even if the I have the throttle wide open.

What makes a clutch operated PTO whine and rattle?

A sure sign of potential trouble with a clutch operated P.T.O. is erratic operation. Listen carefully for a whine or high pitched sound. This could indicate issues with the gears being too tight, bearings or hydraulics. A rattle could indicate issues with the gears too loose or torsional vibrations.

Why won’t my Clutch engage?

If the clutch doesn’t engage, the problem could be a blown fuse, an open in the wire to the clutch coil, a bad clutch coil, a poor ground, or a low pressure lockout. In some vehicles the compressor clutch relay is turned on and off by the low pressure switch and the evaporator temperature sensor.

How does a PTO clutch work?

The power take off (PTO) clutch in your lawnmower is the drive pulley that transfers the power of the engine to the blade. It consists of a few basic parts. The PTO clutch has a pulley that is usually machine cut and a housing brace. The pulley sits on the brace and is allowed to spin around the brace by a vertical axle in the center of the pulley.

Where is the PTO clutch?

The PTO clutch is mounted under the tractor or mower beside the power drive shaft, which is also vertically aligned. It is connected to the blade shaft, and when it spins, the blade spins too. There is a belt that is attached to the drive shaft and PTO clutch pulley. The drive shaft is the main shaft connecting to the engine.
