Common questions

Do you have to drive around to charge battery?

Do you have to drive around to charge battery?

The general consensus is you have to drive the car at least 30 minutes to put any meaningful charge on it. This is not to say that driving for 30 minutes will fully re-charge your battery. If your car battery has been sitting for some time, then driving it around for 30 minutes may not fully recharge it.

How long do I need to drive around to charge my battery?

  1. It’s usually best to drive your car for about half an hour to charge a car battery. This is often enough time for charging so that the vehicle will start again once you turn it off.
  2. You should drive a little longer if your battery has been dead for a while, and you want to make sure the battery doesn’t die again.

How do I know if my car battery has enough charge?

Fully charged automotive batteries should measure at 12.6 volts or above. When the engine is running, this measurement should be 13.7 to 14.7 volts. If you don’t have a multimeter to tell you the voltage of your battery, you can do a test of your electrical system by starting the car and turning on the headlights.

Is idle enough to charge battery?

Yes, the alternator does charge the battery while the car is idling – regardless of the load on the battery. However, if your electrical use load (radio, lights, fan, etc) exceeds the amount of charge the battery is receiving from the alternator, you will end up with a discharged battery at some point.

What should I do if my car battery keeps losing charge?

A battery contains sulfuric acid that can cause serious burns. Always wear gloves and eye protection when working around a battery or jump-starting a car. If you come into direct contact with battery acid, flush with plenty of water and get medical attention immediately.

What happens when you charge an ATV battery?

The battery and charger must stay dry during the whole charging process. Also, the battery must be somewhere well-ventilated to vent out any gases from the charging process. Overcharging or even just charging a battery causes a chemical process that releases explosive hydrogen gas.

What to do if your laptop battery is not recharging?

If this method does not fix your recharging issue then you can try to fix or update your laptop battery drivers by uninstalling and reinstalling them (make sure to create a ‘restore point’ in System Restore before manually updating Drivers files).

Can a SLA battery be charged with a manual charger?

While it is possible to charge both AGM and SLA batteries with a manual charger, it is not recommended. If you don’t monitor the charging process carefully, you may overcharge, which would cause gassing and water depletion.

What to do when your car battery is drained?
