Do blower motors have bearings?

Do blower motors have bearings?

All motors, including alternating current (AC) fan motors, have bearings fitted between the armature and the motor housing. Inevitably, they do wear, meaning that the armature is loose, so you need to replace them. You can usually recognize the presence of worn bearings because the motor makes a rattling sound.

How do you replace the bearings on a furnace blower?

Tighten properly the bearings using the wrench and wipe out any excessive lubricants. Once the bearings are installed, put back the furnace blower motor as well. Clean the furnace blower carefully before plugging it and using again. Lastly, you need to test the furnace blower by setting its thermostat and allowing it to run for at least 5 minutes.

When do you Know Your HVAC blower motor needs to be replaced?

For example, squealing or screeching noises may mean that the blower motor has a damaged belt or bearing problems, which can be fixed by replacing the belt or lubricating the bearings respectively. If the motor is making rattling, clanking, or banging sounds, it may be because of a loose or broken part.

Why is my blower fan motor not working?

As the blower motor ages the amperage that it takes to run the motor increases that overloads the electrical system which can cause additional problems. This is due to normal bearing and brush wear that occurs in all motors of this type.

Can a bad bearing cause a motor failure?

Another important step many people forget is to check that sleeve bearings are properly insulated from housing metal. If you omit this protection, circulating currents could cause pits or other damage on the shaft, bearings, and housing. Watch out for bearing endplay.

If there is no manual to follow, you can just follow these simple steps. Using the screwdriver gently remove the furnace blower’s metal panel which hides the blower motor and bearings. Most furnaces include an identification label indicating that the motor is at the back the panel along with its other parts.

Is it OK to oil a blower motor?

The blower motor bearings I oiled are quiet and smooth running. This idea works on ball bearings too. On our home’s outside A/C compressor unit, the motor to the large fan developed a squeak as it powered down. Those motors and the labor to replace them are both expensive.

Can a stove blower be replaced with ball bearings?

If you replace the blower, be careful to find one with ball bearings. Then you’d never have to replace them. I asked a blower supplier why the stove companies don’t ship blowers with ball bearings. I suggested that it’s because of the cost differential.
