Common questions

Can you run AC with cover on?

Can you run AC with cover on?

Never run an air conditioner with its cover on. Air conditioners need to exchange heat and condensation in order to function efficiently, and when an air conditioner runs in a condition where airflow is not optimal, the appliance’s components get compromised.

What does an AC unit sit on?

An air conditioner pad is a piece of material (usually concrete or recycled composite) that sits underneath your central air conditioner.

When should AC turn on?

“Your AC unit should be fired up on the first 70 degree day to make sure it runs properly before the hot weather hits,” says Keith Hill, manager, technical support, for Minnesota Air.

Will my AC fall out of the window?

It’s highly unlikely that your air conditioner will fall out of a window unless you make one of two mistakes: choosing a unit that doesn’t fit the window and failing to secure the unit in place. So before doing anything else, make sure that your window is appropriate for the AC you’ve chosen.

Should you cover air conditioner?

Your air conditioner is made to be open to the air. Covering your air conditioner will block proper air flow which can lead to mold growth on your evaporator coils. The mold can block proper airflow through your coils and decrease your air conditioner’s efficiency.

What happens if air conditioner is not level?

If the condenser is not level, then the air conditioner will have trouble working correctly. The pump inside the unit may not work the way it’s supposed to. When that happens the pump no longer has the lubrication it needs to function, causing a premature failure. It can wear out and overheat.

Should air conditioners be off the ground?

The simplest way to keep your AC unit away from little critters is to raise it up off the ground and reduce the chance that they’ll think it’s a good place to hang around.
