Yes take the rotor off for room. You want to grind the flat part of the head of the stud. You need to in order to slide it past the hub. It will make sense when you try and push the new stud in from behind, it can’t slide past the hub.

Get the old stud out, may need to grind it close to hub so it can be punched out. Use a dremel to cut a slice in the dust cover so you can peel it back out of the way a bit like shown in the picture. Do this at the flattest part of the knuckle.
