Can a Duraspark be used on a FD30 Mustang?

Can a Duraspark be used on a FD30 Mustang?

Durasparks don’t control the timing beyond retarding it a bit when cranking the engine IF you hook up the “white wire”. The FD30 is the correct part. Rock has it for $20 less, pays to shop around. The “good” Duraspark setup is the 78-79 302 California emissions red grommet unit with it’s matching coil.

What’s the plug gap on a Duraspark Mustang?

The Duraspark fixed that. Starting vastly improved. Most Duraspark are what’s called “blue grommet” which refers to the plastic wire retainer. There is a CA version that is the red grommet version. The red grommet buts out a much hotter spark, plug gap is .060″.

Is it possible to convert points to Duraspark?

Rock has it for $20 less, pays to shop around. The “good” Duraspark setup is the 78-79 302 California emissions red grommet unit with it’s matching coil. You can rob a harness out of any Duraspark equipped car in the junkyards, or buy one of the conversion harnesses.

How many RPM does a Duraspark distributor work?

The distributor is capable of 10,000 rpms with our ED Dyna-Module and Inferno Coil kit. It will work with other modules and coils, but rpm ability is not guaranteed. Please note that Duraspark Distributors may not be ready for immediate shipping.

What are the changes to a Duraspark distributor?

The biggest change, apart from the control box redesign, was the large distributor cap to handle the increased spark energy. The system consists of a magnetic reluctor and pickup in the distributor, and an ignition module to trigger the coil. Typically, the distributors have both mechanical and vacuum advance mechanisms.

How does the coil work on a Ford Duraspark?

The switch is closed by sending 12v to the “S” terminal, so when you turn the ignition to “start” you close that switch, sending power to the start and the coil. Because the points could only handle 6v without burning up Ford installed a pink resistor wire, more on that latter. When starting the engine, the coil needs a full 12 volts.

Can a 68 F350 be converted to Duraspark?

I converted a 68 F350 to Duraspark, but it’s now hard to start. I used the original positive wire to the coil to power the new coil and Duraspark module. Somewhere in that original positive coil lead is there a ballast resister? Could the drop in voltage through this resister be causing hard starting?
