Does an ignition coil need a condenser?
Does an ignition coil need a condenser?
Yes, you need it: Condenser: Those same principles of inductance create a kind of paradox, because when the points open and the magnetic field collapses it also induces a current in the primary as well.
What does a condenser do on a ignition coil?
Basically the function of a condenser in a coil ignition circuit is to reduce the spark at the contact points as they open in the distributor and thus minimise burning and pitting of the points. Arcing is caused by the effect of self induction in the coil as the points interrupt the flow of current.
Are ignition condensers interchangeable?
Any condenser of the same value will work. They are indifferent to voltage but the capacitance (microfarads) should be the same or at least close. They aren’t that accurate from new. If the condenser is perfect your points won’t burn.
Does condenser go to positive or negative?
Does the condenser wire go to the negative side or positive side of the coil? There are no differences between neg and pos ground systems inside dizzy. As Jerry says, the condenser lead goes to the distributor feedthru terminal per normal.
What kind of ignition coil does a corvette have?
The coils on early Corvettes are black cylindrical devices; starting in 1975 the coil per se as a discrete cylindrical device was abandoned when GM made the switch to HEI breakerless ignition systems.
Where is the condenser on the ignition coil?
Not sure where exactly that condenser is supposed to be connected but, if I remember correctly, it was for supressing ignition noise in the radio. Carl More sharing options… The capacitor is connected to the positive terminal on the coil. More sharing options… Thanks, Is this condenser the same as the one inside the distributor?
What’s the difference between a Davies and a jacketed coil condenser?
The Jacketed Coil Condenser is similar to the Davies Condenser. The difference is that, instead of having an inner straight tube, the Jacketed Coil Condenser as a coil. The rest is the same. This makes the Jacketed Coil Condenser even more effective than a regular Davies Condenser.
What does a supression condenser on an ignition coil do?
This Supression Condenser acts like a shock absorber + storage device that sends stray voltage harmlessly to ground!!! On a – negative ground system always connect this condenser to the HOT + Positive side of any electrical item. (On + positive ground systems connect to – Neg. Hot side).
