It was also the engine preferred for NASCAR because its shorter stroke (compared to the 428 CJ) allowed higher rpm. It has less torque than the 428 CJ, and is more expensive to make. This is why Ford replaced it in Mustangs with the 428 Cobra Jet.

There was however a 427 “W” code Cougar in 1968, the GT-E. The only version of the 427 with hydraulic lifers with 390 HP. Equipped only with the C-6 automatic. The GT-E switched to the 428CJ later in May or so. It came with Ram Air, some had 4 speeds.
