How does a hydraulic roller lifter work?

How does a hydraulic roller lifter work?

Hydraulic lifters eliminate the clatter and the need for periodic adjustments by maintaining zero clearance when the engine is running. They do this by using oil pressure against a spring-loaded plunger inside the lifter body. This pushes the plunger up to take the slack out of the valvetrain and hold it tight.

Are Melling roller lifters any good?

1.0 out of 5 stars These Melling lifters are JUNK. I would never recommend this product or any other Melling product to anyone. They denied any liability for the lifters needing to be replaced, after 3 of them flying apart.

Do you need break-in oil for roller cam?

Roller cams do not need to be broken-in, nor do they need any zinc in the oil, but ALL flat tappet cams need both. Do NOT break-in your cam or engine with non-detergent oil!

What is the lifter diameter of a Ford FE engine?

The standard FE lifter diameter is the same as other Ford engines at.874 inch, but I have gone to.904- inch diameters in serious race applications. Larger-diameter lifters offer advantages in terms of strength, and on flat-tappet cams they allow more aggressive lobe profiles.

What should the idle oil pressure be on a Ford FE engine?

The cumulative area of all bearing and valvetrain clearances in the engine defines the pressure at any time below peak, such as at idle. FE engines are noted for having fairly low-idle oil pressure, and therefore a hot idle reading of 15 to 25 pounds is common with standard-volume pumps.

What kind of oil pump does a Ford FE use?

The FE factory oiling-system strategy is essentially identical to that of most other Ford V-8s, and requires only modest detail work and attention to assembly in order to function perfectly well. Dramatic alterations are unnecessary in the vast majority of applications. The FE engine uses a gerotorstyle oil pump.

What happens when you add an oil cooler to a FE block?

(With the relative short galleries in our FE block gallery length is not an issue. But if you add an oil cooler then the total length of the lines and the cooler galleries may become a problem if the line diameter is too small.) So we need enough pump pressure to overcome the limits to flow induced by the size and tight corners of the galleries.

Can a flat tappet lifter be converted to a roller bearing?

The parts designed for 460-style engines can be made to work. The benefits of the roller bearing conversion are small, difficult to quantify, and often disputed, but it is a viable repair to a damaged block that may otherwise be discarded. The standard FE hydraulic flat-tappet lifter features a hairpin-style retainer clip.
