What comes on rotors to prevent them from rusting in the packaging that needs to be removed?
What comes on rotors to prevent them from rusting in the packaging that needs to be removed?
Cosmoline is also frequently applied to automotive disc brake rotors at the factory, to prevent corrosion inside the box before the rotor is placed into service on a vehicle.
Is rust normal on rotors?
Not to worry Jonathan, rusty rotors are perfectly normal – most drivers weren’t able to see this rust on their cars until fairly recently, but larger wheels, combined with fewer spokes, make brake parts more visible. Being able to monitor how the friction pads and rotors are wearing is a good thing.
Does it matter if your rotors are rusted?
Rust is bad because it weakens rotors over time, and makes the brakes noisy when the vehicle is first driven after being parked. Rusty rotors also increase brake pad wear. If you are due to have your brake pads replaced, it may be cost effective to have your vehicle’s rotors replaced or resurfaced at the same time.
Is it worth getting coated rotors?
Simply put – thoroughly coating a rotor can provide corrosion protection. It’s important to distinguish between ‘coated’ vs. ‘painted’. In ACDelco’s case, ‘coated’ means a baked on coating that provides a comprehensive coating to help prevent corrosion.
What to do if your brake rotors are rusted out?
If the rotors are pitted badly, you should be concerned. You would avoid much of the rust by parking in the garage. The car would not be subject to morning condensation which accelerates rusting. I’d park in the garage anyway.
Is it normal for disc rotors to rust?
For a car driven only one day a week here is no good way to prevent disc rotor rusting (unless you can move to Phoenix). Rotors rust quickly – that’s what they do. Generally this is normal and harmless. A few applications of the brakes will remove this light surface rust.
Can You Leave your brake rotors out in the rain?
Even so, brakes can work quite well according to my experience with some reduction in swept area but don’t let this go too long. You can leave brake rotors out in the rain for years and they will never “rust out”.
Can a cross drill cause rotors to crack?
Cheap cross-drills will crack or fail early, drilling holes in rotors weakens them and creates stress riser that cause cracks, as well, the holes can shave the pads and can shorten their life. That doesn’t mean the rotors Yeti recommends will be like that, it can be done properly and not cause failures, which seems to be Yeti’s experience.
What can I do about Warped brake rotors?
Drying the brakes after washing helps, as does drying the brakes after a snow or rain, or even on really muggy days. Very gentle pressure on the pedal does it fast, and you can even hear the sound change slightly as they clean off.

Can you replace brake rotors after 28K miles?
The rotor areas that weren’t covered by the pads rusted badly, and the brakes pulsed evermore.. eventually ended up replacing the rotors. At 28K miles it is very unlikely you’ll get any assist from the manufacturer on brake rotors IMHO.
Can you use brake fluid to clean rust?
It’s worth mentioning that it won’t do anything about rust, so don’t expect it to clean any corrosion. Brake fluid is no where near as corrosive as it used to be, but if you spill it on your paintwork it’s still best to clean it up promptly. The best solution is water, and lots of it.
