These mote clouds are untargetable, but you do not need to target the clouds in order to extract them. Just stand close enough and use the extractor and it will suck it up.

The 350 epic engineering goggles can be used to track these gas clouds on the mini-map. You will need the extractor to get the motes. Note: the extractor has a short range and you cannot be moving while using it. It’s VERY good money and makes engineering worthwhile.
Where can I find primal life?
By-far the best place to farm these motes is south-western Zangarmarsh, particularly if you are a herbalist. They are lvl 63-64, easy to kill & you can skin them after killing them to yield another chance for motes.

To use the Zapthrottle Mote Extractor, you need to find one of four different types of clouds, stand next to it, and activate the Extractor. All of these clouds are visible normally except the Arcane Vortex clouds in Netherstorm, which are invisible without Ultra-Spectropic Detection Goggles.

Can you track gas clouds TBC?
As of patch 2.3, they will show all nearby gas clouds on your minimap. The tracker that’s on the upper left corner of your minimap will not indicate this, the gas clouds will simply show up as yellow dots wandering around on your minimap.
