The Phipps Conservatory was founded in 1893 as a gift from Henry Phipps Jr. to the City of Pittsburgh. The Conservatory was designed by Lord & Burnham, for a fee of $100,000. The glasshouse, then consisting of nine display rooms, was completed in August 1893, one year after construction began.

When do Pitt students get free Phipps tickets?

Please note that Pitt students only receive free student tickets during the Fall and Spring semesters. Large groups are not admitted at this time. For safety, Phipps will not honor these ticket benefits at universities where and when shelter-in-place orders are in effect.

When does Phipps public garden close for Christmas?

Please note: Some areas of the public garden occasionally close during normal business hours for private events. We are also closed on Thanksgiving Day. For the Christmas holiday, Phipps closes at 5 p.m. on Dec. 24 and reopens at 9:30 a.m. on Dec. 26.
