What is Pithru Tharpanam?
On Karkidaka vavu day on Tuesday, hundreds of people took part in the ‘pithru tharpanam’ rituals, in memory of departed ancestors, at various Siva temples in the district. People believe that the souls of their departed relatives will come to bless them and receive the offerings on the vavu bali day.
When should Tarpanam be done?

Why is Thithi done?
In the Hindu religion, it is the ritual that one performs to pay homage to one’s ‘ancestors’ (Sanskrit: Pitṛs), especially to one’s dead parents. It is performed for both the father and mother separately, on their respective ‘thithi’ – death anniversaries as per the Hindu Calendar.
