Is it possible to coolant leaking from my timing chain cover?

Is it possible to coolant leaking from my timing chain cover?

Still had leak after change, was under car checking the hose’s could not see them leaking grab one and squeezed it coolant sprayed out from behind the timing cover. Needed new gasket big job took it to local shop had them put a oil pan gasket on it since they have to remove so much to change the timing cover gasket.

Where does the coolant come from on a Firestone water pump?

Took it to Firestone and they say the water pump is fine and the leak is coming from the timing cover. They want $800 to replace the cover and gasket, flush the coolant system, and replace the Dex-Cool.

What can I do to stop my water pump from leaking?

If they put dye in it already a 10 dollar black light will help. Replacing the timing chain cover is a big job. They did a cooling system pressure test and say they’re 100% sure it’s the timing cover causing the leak. They say the water pump is fine. I’ll probably catch hell for even suggesting it but if it were mine I would try stop-leak.

What to do about a coolant leak in a Pontiac G6 GT?

2005 Pontiac G6 GT with 87,200 miles and the 3.5L V6 engine. I would want to verify for myself the source of the leak. If they put dye in it already a 10 dollar black light will help. Replacing the timing chain cover is a big job.

Where is the timing cover gasket on a car?

If your vehicle is equipped with a timing belt, then it will be mounted external to the engine’s lubrication system so your engine won’t have a timing cover gasket to leak. If your vehicle has a timing chain, there will be a cover over the chain and drive gears to contain the engine oil so it is very possible that is where your leak is coming from.

Where does the oil leak come from on the timing belt?

If you having a timing belt and notice an oil leak coming from the front of your engine, try reading our article about camshaft seal replacements to see if that is where your leak is. Since the timing cover must surround the entire timing chain, which runs from the engine crank up to the camshafts, it’s a large cover with a large gasket.

What to do when your timing cover is off?

Once everything is off, try tapping back and forth to help break the gasket loose. You may need to use a sharp and thin gasket scraper to tap between TC and front of block to get off. Once it’s off and you are proceeding with the repairs, take a close look at the timing chain and tensioneer while you are this far.

Is the timing chain cover aluminum or cast iron?

Yes this area is a common leak point for V engines. I believe the block is cast iron and the timing chain cover is aluminum. It is quite costly to replace the gasket in that location as the front part of the engine has to be disassembled. Unless the mechanic finds that the timing chain and gears need replacement, I would forgo replacing them IMHO.

Why is my water pump leaking behind the timing cover?

If the water pump on this vehicle is behind the timing cover that’s what will be starting to leak. It will save you labor charges if you do other maintenance while the timing chain cover is off. Besides a chain and gear tooth inspection and water pump replacement, (IF it is leaking) a replacement of the chain tensioner may be wise.

Can a water pump be dismounted from a timing chain?

Usually the water pump does not need to be dismounted from the timing chain cover so you needn’t replace that gasket. The mechanic will have to know what he is doing as usually the oil pan gasket has to be refreshed where it mates to the timing chain cover and any seams created sealed with RTV sealant.
