What happened to sham in the Belmont?
While Sham did not race again after the Belmont Stakes, he was not retired until July 1973. Sham died of a heart attack on April 3, 1993, at age 23. At the necropsy, his heart weighed in at 18 pounds (8.2 kg), about twice the size of the average thoroughbred heart. He is buried at Walmac Farm.

Did Secretariat really have an abscess?
In his next race at Gotham Stakes, Secretariat again surged ahead of the pack to win. Before the race, an abscess had been discovered on the top of his mouth, likely caused by a burr in his hay. Groomer, Eddie Sweat, would tell The Thoroughbred Record six years later that the abscess “bothered” the horse “a lot.”
Was Sham a good sire?
Sham spent most of his long stallion career at Spendthrift Farm, where he enjoyed a successful, but not spectacular career as a stallion, before later moving on to Walmac Farm. He sired many stakes winners, but none of his progeny would possess the great talent or the heart of their sire.
