What is asteroid ejecta?

What is asteroid ejecta?

A blanket of ejecta is formed during the formation of meteor impact cratering and is composed usually of the materials of that are ejected from the cratering process. An ejecta blanket is deposited in the interior regions of the crater rim to the final crater rim and beyond the crater rim.

What is Moon ejecta?

Bright ejecta around a lunar crater. On the airless Moon and Mercury, the ejecta deposits are characterized by a hilly continuous deposit surrounding the crater, called the continuous ejecta blanket. This continuous deposit grades into strings (Figure 8) and clusters of small craters called secondary craters.

Why do ejecta blankets on Mars look fluid?

Water might have been produced if the ice in the regolith was melted upon impact. (Note that regolith represents solid materials lying on top of the bedrock, including soil, rock fragments, and other materials.) Apparently, ejecta from those Martian craters became fluid, allowing it to flow after excavation.

What is ejecta thickness?

Predicted average thickness of Imbrium ejecta at Apollo 15 is 812 m; at Apollo 14, 130 m; at Apollo 17, 102 m; and at Apollo 16, 50 m.

How does mass affect the amount of ejecta?

Note that a correlation between the speed and size/mass of the ejecta causes different moments with respect to the same variable to have different slopes. If larger, heavier ejecta are slower than smaller, lighter ones, then m(u) will be steeper than f(u).

What’s the definition of ejecta?

Definition of ejecta : material thrown out (as from a volcano)

Why is ejecta a lighter color?

Lighter colors, such as yellow, indicate the presence of altered rocks. The possible sources of the ejecta is most likely from two unnamed craters.

What does the word ejecta mean?

: material thrown out (as from a volcano)

What makes the ejecta blankets surrounding Martian craters smoother than those seen on the Moon or Mercury?

OR: Mars has a denser atmosphere intermittently when asteroids strike, melting a significant amount of subsurface ice. What makes the ejecta blankets surrounding Martian craters smoother than those seen on the Moon or Mercury? Impact craters have smooth ejecta blankets caused by ice vaporized by impact.

How does the ejecta on the Mars crater differ from the ejecta on the Moon?

The ejecta pattern around most fresh Martian impact craters is distinctively different from that around lunar and mercurian craters. On the Moon and on Mercury, the ejecta typically have a coarse, disordered texture close to the rim. Most Martian craters have quite a different ejecta pattern.

How do you measure ejecta thickness?

To obtain the ejecta thickness, he, we subtracted the identified ejecta-bedrock contact elevation from the rim crest elevation (Figure 6). We calculated the ratio of hu and he that together compose the total amount of the elevated crater rim, hr.

Where are the types of ejecta found in relation to impact sites?

Impact ejecta found at distances greater than 5 crater radii from the rim of the source crater, as opposed to proximal ejecta, which are found closer than 5 crater radii from the crater rim, and which make up about 90% of all material thrown out of the crater during the impact event.
