I was recently getting a service 4wd light in my 03 yukon xl. the lights for the switch also went out. I crawled under the truck and started looking at connections to the transfercase. I found that one of the connections had a small amount of corrosion in it. I pulled it apart, sprayed it with contact cleaner and reassembled.
Can a 4HI transmission be shifted into a 2 speed case?
There is no procedure shifting into or out of 4HI and can be done at any speed. If you had a 2-speed transfer case (with 4lo) that needs to be done at 3mph or less with the transmission in neutral. Thanks guys. This clears things up quite a bit.

When does my Tahoe shift to 4WD by itself?
At random times my Tahoe will shift into 4wd hi or lo by itself. It happens while driving, or when i first start the vehicle. It takes 20 min of button pushing to get back to 2hi. Clicking this will make more experts see the question and we will remind you when it gets answered.

If traction control is turned off the 4×4 seems to work even tho the Service 4WD message is showing. How can I tell if my Yukon XL has AWD or 4WD?
The easiest way to tell is have them send you a pick of the push button selector on the dash. 4wd will have: Auto 4wd, 4 high, 2wd, 4 low, buttons. I think that the AWD just has a 2 low and traction control button. [MENTION=51590]Pikey [/MENTION] would have the answers :great:

What does the service 4WD light on a GM Truck mean?
The solid lights on the 4WD buttons are telling you where the transfer case encoder motor thinks it is, and blinks on the mode that it is trying to go to after you push the button. If it fails to move to the new position, it goes back to a solid light on the original position and illuminates the “SERVICE 4WD” light.

Wire brushed it down and nothing changed. My 4wd would blink but not engage. It would engage into lower gear in 4lo but wouldn’t actually go into 4wd. Taking a closer look at the wires, I noticed that there is a small ground wire that was hidden in the tube that got unconnected. Simply put a new connector on it and works like a charm now!
