What is a high mount brake light?

This light sits between your the two side brake lights to provide a more visible sign to drivers behind you when you’re driving. They can break a number of ways, from collisions, vandals, and airborne road debris, and getting the high mount brake light fixed at the dealership can be pricey.

How does the brake light wiring system work?

How Brake Light Wiring Works. The brake light wiring system in most cars is not overly complex. At one end, you have the lights themselves: bulbs in sockets connected to a wiring harness. At the other end is the brake switch, where the pedal presses down and creates contact that completes the circuit. The system draws power from the car’s battery.

What to do if your brake light does not work?

If the turn signal switch is not working properly, your brake light can also not work. Find the wire that connects the brake light and the turn signal switch and replace it. Chances are that this action would solve your problem. If not, then you have no other choice but to visit a mechanic or an electrician.

Why do you need a brake light and a tail light?

The brake lights and taillights are often comprised of one light bulb, but they work differently. Taillights are necessary for nighttime driving. They are in place so other drivers can spot you from behind and so that they can brake at a safe distance from you if you stop.

Is the brake light the same as the emergency light?

On vehicles where the flashers are separate from the brake lights, this will not apply. The emergency flashers often use the same wiring, bulbs and sockets as the brakes. If all lights come on, when the emergency flashers are turned on, this shows the bulbs, wires and sockets are good.

Where are the mounting screws on a brake light?

This is done by inspecting the lens and looking for mounting screws which hold the lens to the vehicle which can be on the side of the lens. You may need to open the truck, hatch back, tailgate or lift back. If no mounting bolts are found on the outside of the lens they will be located in the inside of the rear body panel.

How does a brake light control switch work?

On older vehicles the switch connects power to the brake lights directly. Some German build cars use a lighting control module in place of a BCM. A brake lamp switch is designed to work with at least two wires and up to six wires in the switch harness.

What do you need to know about brake lights?

A wiring diagram and ohmmeter are needed. The wiring diagram shows which terminals to check. With only two terminals, continuity should show in one position and an open circuit in the other. Some vehicles may have multiple switches on the brake pedal, and some switches may have more than one set of contacts.

What to do when your third brake light is not working?

When the lower lights do not come on and only the third-brake light works, the brake-light switch may be ruled out. Again try the emergency-flashers to check for wiring, socket and lamp problems. If the flashers work, check for blown fuses as a few vehicles use separate circuits for the lower and third brake lights.
