Why does my car rattle on a cold start?
Why does my car rattle on a cold start?
When from a cold start I get this annoying startup rattle for 1-2 seconds then it’s gone. Engine is very quiet after this initial rattle. Car drives fine etc. As I am aware this is a widespread problem but nobody has a definitive answer to solve this.
Why are my heat shields rattling under my car?
These heat shields are made of thin pieces of metal, and are placed between these components and the underfloor of the vehicle. They have become a common source of rattling noises under the car. Over time, heat shields can rust out or become loose and get detached from their mountings.
Is it normal for a VW engine to rattle?
I’ve certainly heard the same thing from many modern VW/Audi engines and professionally I consider it normal and harmless, although I find their 4 cylinder engines to be absurdly noisy in general and find that startup noise and general engine noise unacceptable personally.
Where does the rattling sound come from in a car?
To simplify this process, we’ve broken down the possible locations to four main areas of your vehicle: Rattling noises that come from the bottom of your vehicle may be noticeable upon starting, while driving at certain speeds, when you hit a bump in the road, or even all the time.

What makes a rattle noise when a car is parked?
I can definitively say the problem is that the oil used to keep the hydraulic lifters or a timing chain tensioner adjusted is bleeding out when it sits parked for long enough.
What to do if your car’s Suspension rattles?
So, place your jack and jackstands under the control arms or the rear axle to keep the weight on the suspension components. You can pinpoint bad upper A-frame or control arm bushings by having a helper hold the brakes firmly with the engine idling while shifting from Drive through Neutral to Reverse repeatedly.
What makes the clatter noise in an engine?
The actual sounds are generated at combustion and the opening and closing of valves. You really cannot hear the injection of the fluids into the chambers. Also, as another poster first pointed out (DucatiKiller), there is sometimes a piston slap that make a audible sound but not always in newer engines.
What causes pre ignition or valve clatter in a car?
Exhaust-gas-recycle (EGR) Exhaust-gas-recycle (EGR) is one system that helps to control pre-ignition and reduce emissions. EGR operates when conditions exist that cause pinging or valve clatter. A valve opens and circulates exhaust gas into the intake manifold to cool the combustion process.
When does oil pressure come up does the engine Rattle?
(It comes up instantly, not slowly.) The engine “rattles” until the oil pressure comes up to normal. After the engine has been run, the oil pressure comes up within a second the rest of the day. (No rattling) Does the oil pump have to stay primed?
Why does my car rattle on cold start?
If you hear engine rattle noise from your engine on cold start, and the engine rattle noise goes away after a few seconds, and the engine rattle noise comes from the side of the timing cover we will explain what could cause that. Most new engines nowadays are equipped with timing chain.

How can I get rid of the engine lifter noise?
This will continuously pressurize and de-pressurize the lifters, sending the solvent through and breaking lifter plungers loose. Drain the oil into your oil drain pan, but leave the old oil filter in place. Refill the engine with very lightweight engine-flushing oil.
Why does my lifter make noise at high RPM?
Check the oil level. If the oil level is low enough, the oil pump may begin to suck in air at high RPM, thus starving the lifters of the required pressure.
When to replace lifters on an overhead cam engine?
If you find that the engine had bent pushrods, worn out lifters (or lash adjusters on an overhead-cam engine), damaged or worn out rocker arms (cam followers on an overhead cam engine) or worn out valvesprings, then you’ll need to replace the affected components.

What should I do if I hear lifter noise in my engine?
Start the engine and check for lifter tapping. Remove the engine’s valve covers and check for broken or bent components.
Why is my FSI engine making a rattle noise?
Also keep in mind that I don’t know if your FSI engine is an older style using a timing belt with the hydraulic tensioner in the head for the cam chain, or if it’s the newer style with all chains.
What kind of engine makes noise during cold start?
These engines generate noises during cold start and during warm operation that technicians may not be familiar with. The new Small Block Gen 5 engine family incorporates Direct Injection (DI). This technology is included as standard equipment on all Generation 5 engines in the Small Block engine family which are the: 4.3L V6, 5.3L V8, and 6.2L V8.

What kind of noise does a 4.6L engine make?
Ford 4.6/5.4L 3V Start-Up Noise Some Ford vehicles equipped with a 4.6L 3-valve or 5.4L 3-valve engine may exhibit a ticking and/or knocking noise after reaching normal operating temperature, or a rattle upon starting. The noise may be described as ticks, taps, knocks, or thumps.
