The annual March for Meals celebration commemorates the historic day in March of 1972 when President Nixon signed into law a measure that amended the Older Americans Act of 1965 to include a national nutrition program for seniors 60 years and older.
What does Meals on Wheels do?
Meals on Wheels delivers healthy meals to clients’ homes to not only ensure their nutritional requirements are being met, but to provide regular social contact and a friendly check to see that all is well. This enables people to continue to live in their own homes and maintain their freedom and lifestyle.

Our Meals on Wheels service is registered to provide supports to eligible people with disability under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Funded by the Australian Government’s Commonwealth home support program for older people aged 65 and over (50 and over if Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander).
How is Meals on Wheels changing?
Meals on Wheels processes are rapidly changing in order to reduce the potential spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and ensure we can continue to deliver meals to the most vulnerable in our community. We have also asked our volunteers social distancing recommendations (where possible) when delivering meals.
How do you qualify for Meals on Wheels program?
Persons 60 years of age and older who are homebound (unable to drive) and are in need of substantial support in at least two areas of daily functioning (based on an assessment) are eligible to receive Meals on Wheels.

Every effort is made to keep meals as affordable as possible, particularly as many of our customers are receiving support from a Government-funded program or experiencing food insecurity. Meals on Wheels meals are provided at production cost and range in price from $4.50 to $12.00, depending on the service.

The USDA operates a program called The Emergency Food Assistance Program, or TEFAP. This program is designed to help supplement the diets of low income Americans and specifically offers free food for seniors.

Why do seniors eat dinner early?
Particularly, they may eat dinner earlier to avoid nighttime indigestion. They don’t want to drive at night or prepare meals. In the early evening, they might eat some candy or ice cream. Our sense of taste diminishes with age, and sweet or salty food may be more appealing.
Who is eligible for Meals on Wheels NSW?
In order to be eligible for CHSP, you must be 65 years or older (50 years or older for Indigenous citizens) OR 50 years or older (45 years for Indigenous Australians) and on a low income, homeless or at risk of being homeless.
