The genetically mutated remnants of the Prothean species known as the Collectors reveal themselves in Mass Effect 2. Coordinated by a Collector General, they kill Shepard and begin abducting human colonies throughout the galaxy in order to construct a new Reaper.

Why did the leviathans create the Reapers?
