Are you awake during a TEE?
Are you awake during a TEE?
Because of the sedative, you may not be entirely awake for the test. Your heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen level of your blood will be closely monitored during and immediately after the exam. The TEE takes approximately 90 minutes for preparation and procedure.
What can a TEE diagnose?
Doctors may use TEE to help diagnose:
- Coronary heart disease.
- Congenital (kon-JEN-ih-tal) heart disease.
- Heart attack.
- Aortic aneurysm (AN-u-rism)
- Endocarditis (EN-do-kar-DI-tis)
- Cardiomyopathy (KAR-de-o-mi-OP-ah-thee)
- Heart valve disease.
What is the difference between TTE and TEE?
As compared with TTE, TEE offers superior visualization of posterior cardiac structures because of close proximity of the esophagus to the posteromedial heart with lack of intervening lung and bone. This proximity permits use of high-frequency imaging transducers that afford superior spatial resolution.
Does a TEE procedure hurt?
Many people find TEE to be uncomfortable, but not actually painful. The staff at the echocardiography lab will take several steps to make you as comfortable as possible during the procedure. Your throat will be numbed with an anesthetic spray, gel,or gargling solution.
How long does a TEE scan take?
How long does the test take? The test will take about 90 minutes. Afterwards, you may need more tests.
Are you intubated for TEE?
The patient needs to have tracheal intubation and have cardiac monitoring prior to TEE probe placement.
Why would a doctor order a TEE?
A TEE is done when your doctor needs a closer look at your heart or does not get the information needed from a regular echo. You may need a combination of a TEE, Doppler ultrasound and color Doppler to get information about how blood flows across your heart’s valves.
Is TEE considered surgery?
A transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) is a diagnostic procedure that uses echocardiography (sound waves) to assess the heart’s function.
What are the risks of a transesophageal echocardiogram?
Possible risks of TEE include:
- Breathing problems.
- Heart rhythm problems.
- Bleeding.
- Injury to the teeth, mouth, throat or esophagus.
How long does a TEE procedure take?
How long does the test take? The test will take about 90 minutes. Afterwards, you may need more tests. Otherwise, your driver can take you home.

Can a TEE Show blocked arteries?
Transesophageal echocardiography may be done to evaluate signs and symptoms that may suggest: Atherosclerosis. This is a gradual clogging of the arteries by fatty materials and other substances in the blood.
