Why does my Silverado 4WD not fully engage?

It feels like it gets some power to the front wheels but they never fully engage. No service 4wd light comes on and 4wd buttons all work as they should. The hubs lock when 4wd is selected, and the truck shifts into low gear when 4lo is selected. The front wheels simply do not get the power that they should.

When does a 4 wheel drive axle fail?

The axle assembly seldom fails but rather the CV joints itself. In most cases, it is the outer CV joint that fails first since it does more work than the inner CV. A CV joint failure can happen when 4WD is engaged and the front wheel of your vehicle becomes airborne in a cross axle or rock climbing situation.

Can a 4WD vehicle have two locking differentials?

A 4WD vehicle that has two locking differentials provides true 4WD — all four wheels turn with the same amount of power no matter the situation. Even if the wheels on one side of your vehicle are completely off the ground, the wheels that are still on the ground will still continue to get a steady amount of torque.

Since 2004+ they’ve been more robust and seldom cause issues. To test if the actuator is meshing and engaging, remove both lines and with the front still raised, the front CV shafts should be engaged and be rotating as well.

What to do if front drive is not fully engaged?

To definitively say if the front driveshaft transfer case output is not being engaged, the best way is to get it on a lift, put it 4hi and later 4lo, and simply try it off the ground a little in drive. I would NOT do this on jackstands, tipping over a risk.

First, so you are sure it will work when needed, and secondly, to keep everything lubed. Regardless of the make and year, as they age they should be check when you don’t need them so they work when you do. Not using 4wd is ne of the biggest causes of failure ! Take it to a mechanic. Everything’s a guess from here on out.

What does it mean when front differential won’t engage?

On the front, there is an actuator that engages the front differential to the front drive shafts. It may not be engaging if the transfer case does. It is easy to check which is at fault by a mechanic with the truck on a lift.

Why does my 4 wheel drive not engage?

Basically, The IWE requires constant vacuum pressure to keep the drivetrain in 2wd mode. Once there is a leak the pressure is lost and the hub will “dislocate” and attempt to engage 4H. If there is a leak or only partial vacuum pressure loss, the Hub won’t fully engage.

Why is my transfer case not engaged on my F150?

The transfer case shift motor was quite troublesome and problematic in earlier models of the F150 life. Since 2004+ they’ve been more robust and seldom cause issues. To test if the actuator is meshing and engaging, remove both lines and with the front still raised, the front CV shafts should be engaged and be rotating as well.

If the wheel rotates with the driveshaft and the truck is in 4H you have a problem with the IWE on that wheel. If you are experiencing a problem with a grinding noise coming from the front of your vehicle while accelerating then this section is for you.
