Common questions

Is switch positive or negative?

Is switch positive or negative?

If your system has the battery negative tied to earth/safety ground (or frame ground of a vehicle), then you want the switch in the positive leg. If your battery bank is floating (not tied to any sort of safety/frame ground), in theory, you want a double pole switch that turns off both + and – power at the same time.

Do you have to ground a 12v switch?

Grounding light switches have become commonplace, used as a preventative safety measure. It is perfectly legal to wire a light switch without the inclusion of a ground. Dimmers will require a ground wire but traditional toggle-type switches will not.

What is the difference between power and ground wire?

Power Ground is the low side (0V) of the power input. The GND on the schematic is connected directly to PIN 1 and PIN 4 of the BLACK power input connector and is thus connected to the low side of the customers power supply.

What is a positive ground system?

A 6-volt positive ground system runs the positive side of the battery to the frame of the car, causing the frame and chassis to carry the current (this was thought to reduce corrosion). When an accessory is wired back to the ground side of the battery, it completes the circuit. A 6-volt negative ground is the opposite.
