Can a Duramax diesel run in cold weather?

Can a Duramax diesel run in cold weather?

-50F is very extreme for any vehicle, gas or diesel. Typical testing by OEM’s is -40F max, doubt that -50 is common or would last very long. That being said in extreme climates you will have to plug in any vehicle to have it work, the fuel is normally treated so it will work at those temps and also you will need to run the right weight oil.

What should I put on my Duramax in the winter?

Put extra anti gel in the winter. Never had a problem even in -14 F unheated out side and engine block heater not plugged in. Always use Lucas Anti-Gel and Lucas Cetane Boost. Can’t speak for the DEF problem sure glad I don’t have use it.

Do you need a Duramax Diesel in Florida?

You wouldn’t need in Florida, but sure as hell would where I go in the cold mountains. I can assure everyone, there is no issue with DEF and it freezing and thawing up here in Canada.

Where to test diesel trucks in cold weather?

All that being said, I will say, you will rarely see diesel pickups in lumber camps in Northern Ontario (GM cold weather testing used to be in Hearst Ontario) because there is no hydro in the bush to plug trucks in. Again, not a DEF issue but rather a cold start issue.

Can a GMC Duramax diesel start in cold weather?

You will have a cold start issue if not plugged in long before any DEF issue. Now, my personal experience only goes down to -40 Fahrenheit. Below that I will need to defer to those people who live in Northern Canada or Alaska. This was a huge discussion around 2011-2012 when everyone started buying DEF trucks.

Can a diesel do well in cold weather?

Overall the new diesels with their high pressure direct injection and control systems normally do very well in cold weather. Given that it will only be that cold for very brief periods of time better you get what you need and want for the whole year and understand that a few extra steps will need to be taken during extreme cold.
