I believe GM requires syn for front and rear axle SAE 75W-90 Synthetic Axle Lubricant, except in the case of the auto 4 wheel drive system which does not require syn and recommends SAE 80W-90 (which seems a bit odd to me but that is out of a 2013 owners manual. I might check the service manual on this.)
