Common questions

Are there low, medium, and high speed fan relays?

Are there low, medium, and high speed fan relays?

Coming out of the BCM, there are two lines. One for low speed, one for medium speed, and both for high. The 5 fan relays change that into 3 wires going to the fan module: low, medium and high. (There’s another wire somewhere for the ground return.) In the fan, the low and medium run though resistors and a thermal fuse.

Can a single cooling fan be connected to a single fan?

Connecting a single cooling fan is a rather straightforward system, it relies on a separate temperature sender to switch the fan on, or you can utilize the cooling fan output if you’ve installed an aftermarket EFI conversion.

What are the relays for the radiator fan?

The 5 fan relays change that into 3 wires going to the fan module: low, medium and high. (There’s another wire somewhere for the ground return.) In the fan, the low and medium run though resistors and a thermal fuse. High is direct and bypasses the thermal fuse.

Do you need a relay kit for dual cooling fans?

Wiring Dual Cooling Fans With dual cooling fans, there are two methods for wiring up the relay kit. This is based on the draw from the fans, if the fans are larger and draw more than 15 amps each, it’s recommended to install a second relay kit as shown below.

How do you replace a cooling fan relay?

The cooling fan relay has an electrical connector that will need to be disconnected and switched over to the replacement cooling fan relay. Most commonly used connectors are a push type connector. Disconnect connector and remove cooling fan relay. Step 3: Compare the replacement cooling fan relay to the one being removed.

Can a high speed fan have low resistance to ground?

At least one fan terminal will have a low resistance to ground (or the fan wouldn’t run at all). But if one of the other terminals are missing resistance to ground within a few hundred ohms or so, that speed is bad. If you just measure between the terminals, you should show resistance between each one – but if they’re bad, you won’t have any.

When do I need to replace the aux fan resistor?

The auxiliary fan resistor is in need of replacement when the auxiliary fan does not operate at low speed. The aux fan should activate: To test if your aux fan is working in either high or low speeds, you can remove the radiator coolant temp sensor connector and jump the green power wire against either of the black ground wires.
