What does it smell like when you have a differential leak?

What does it smell like when you have a differential leak?

Differential oil usually has a distinctive smell. So if you see oil from a leak and it has a distinctive odor, it could be a differential fluid leak. However, differentials don’t always leak from the differential itself. Sometimes the outer axle seals fail and fluid leaks into the brake assembly. You might not see a leak of this type right away.

What was the problem with the Ford F-150 differential?

At highway cruising speed, with the cruise control on, the truck spontaneously locked up the wheels and went into an uncontrollable skid off the interstate highway into the ditch and up the embankment.

What causes a leak in the front of a differential?

If you find that your leak is in the front of the differential where the axle joins the assembly, it’s likely your pinion seal is leaking. Pinion seals aren’t always easy to replace, so be sure the leak is bad enough to be worth fixing before you dive in.

What causes rough idle on a Ford F150?

A common cause of rough idle is a bad exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), in which a new EGR valve can solve this problem. The cost is $200-$400. Handy Hint: Have you heard of the F150’s quiet start? If not, it will let your F150 idle at lower RPMs so to not wake up the neighbors. You can find out more here in my guide to the F150 quiet start option.

When did Ford F150 have weak leaf springs?

Weak leaf springs along the front of the vehicle were found in the 1991-94 Ford F150 models. New springs or added leaves will fix the issue, but some trucks require a newly aligned suspension as well as a replacement of any additional parts in the suspension.
