Why do you need a suction line accumulator?
Why do you need a suction line accumulator?
The suction line accumulator is designed to keep liquid refrigerant from entering the compressor while still allowing for oil return. The trouble is that if the oil return port/screen clogs, the accumulator can fill with oil and actually cause the compressor to fail.
Can you take the accumulator out of the engine?
Loosen the clamp or support device that secures the accumulator in position. You can now completely remove the couplings and lift the accumulator out of the engine compartment. Make sure to keep it upright, as refrigerant oil and other nasty liquids may be in the bottom of it.
What to do if your suction line accumulator whistles?
On certain low-temp or flooded systems, it may be necessary to install a higher efficiency oil separator. If a high-pitched whistle from the accumulator is noticed upon initial start- up of the system, ensure that the accumulator inlet and outlet have been piped correctly. Can a pressure sensor be removed from an accumulator?
Remove the pressure sensor connector from the accumulator. This can usually be unplugged, but be careful, as there may be a clip that needs to be depressed or pried up to release it. Loosen the inlet and outlet couplings on the accumulator. Use the correct wrenches, and make sure the fittings do not allow the refrigerant lines to twist.
Where is the accumulator in a suction line?
The accumulator is installed in the suction line close to the compressor. It usually is a vertical container with top connections. An internal U-tube reaching down near the bottom is installed on the accumulator outlet connection so that the inlet tube is near the top of the container.

How is a suction accumulator used in a compressor?
A suction accumulator is used to prevent liquid refrigerant floodback to the compressor. A compressor is designed to move vapor refrigerant, NOT liquid, and the accumulator can really help us win that battle.
