What is timing gear in engine?
What is timing gear in engine?
: the gear train with a two to one reduction through which the crankshaft drives the camshaft and thus controls valve timing in a four-stroke cycle internal-combustion engine.
How is the timing on a Ford 460?
I am timing it with the vacuum disconnected from the distributor and hose plugged. Hose is connected to the port on the carb. This is a basic engine, no emissions left, maybe 3 vacuum hoses. I’d have to go count but you get the idea. Engine ran well before the pickup coil went bad.
How does vacuum advance work on Ford 460?
Initial plus mechanical. Vacuum advance is at part throttle to increase response and economy and does not count toward total timing as noted above. Watch the distance between the reluctor tooth and pick up to see if it changes as you apply vacuum to the dashpot. Check the coil resistance at rest and at full advance to see if it changes.
Can a Ford 460 be a 472 engine?
If you are looking to over-bore a 460 then it can easily handle a 0.060 increase which would make it a 472. The OEM heads on a 460 are a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to performance. The intake side of the head provides a cross-sectional oval port which helped give the engine the high torque ratings that it was known for.
What’s the stroke length of a Ford 460?
A stock 460 cylinder bore was measured at 4.36 inches and had a 3.85 inch stroke with a rod length of 6.605 inches which would create a nice rod length to stroke ratio of 1.71:1. If you are looking to over-bore a 460 then it can easily handle a 0.060 increase which would make it a 472.

What was the firing order for the Ford 460?
Firing Order: 15426378 1973-1996 Ford 460 with 4 Barrel Carb Max Brake Horsepower: Both horsepower and torque for the 460 from 1973 until 1996 changed many times depending on emission controls, various fuel injection and carburetor setups as well as what the engine was used in.
