How do you determine 289 or 302?

How do you determine 289 or 302?

Other than the original tag on the motor, which is usually long gone, there is very little way to externally tell a 289 from a 302. If the casting number is before the 1968 production year you know it is a 289. If it is 1969 or later it is a 302. If a 4 barrel (J code) it is a 302.

How do I know if my engine is a 289?

The crank ID or measuring the stroke is about the only way to tell. If it’s a 67 or earlier (back to early 65 anyway) car, the motor should be a 289.

What causes the timing marks on a harmonic balancer to shift?

Misaligned timing marks. The harmonic balancers found on many vehicles are constructed as two pieces of metal with a rubber layer in between to dampen the vibrations. If the layers separate or slip, the timing marks, which are usually stamped into the front of the pulley, can shift and thus throw off the placement of the timing marks.

What do you need to know about harmonic balancer?

The harmonic balancer is an engine component found on virtually all rotating internal combustion engines and plays an important role in protecting the engine from dangerous harmonic vibrations and potential damage. For this reason, if you suspect that your harmonic balancer may be having an issue,…

What kind of crankshaft is 289 high performance?

A 289 High Performance crankshaft is identified the same way plus having the Brinell test stamp. Sometimes, you find a “K” on the Hi-Po crankshaft, but not always. When you’re shopping for a crankshaft, be sure you haven’t found a bogus Hi-Po crank with a fake Brinell test mark.

Can a bad harmonic balancer cause an engine to shake?

If the harmonic balancer gets too old or fails and can no longer properly absorb the harmonic vibrations, the engine will shake excessively. The shaking will become even more pronounced, and therefore dangerous to the engine at high speeds.
